Homes
and businesses without a security alarm system have a significantly
higher break-in rate. So it's important to invest in an alarm system to
protect your property. To increase your security, make sure your alarm
system is connected to an IQ Certified alarm monitoring company.
Here are a few additional tips you can use to protect your home or business:
Home Security Tips
- Attempt to "burglarize" your home. You'll discover any
weaknesses in your security system that may have previously escaped
your notice.
- Noise is the last thing a would-be burglar
wants, so a barking dog – even a small one – can be a major burglary
deterrent. However, simply having a dog should not be your only
deterrent.
- Reflective numbers outside the front of your home
will make it easy for police and ambulances to find your location in
case of emergency.
- Sliding glass doors are a favorite target for thieves. Something as
simple as placing a length of broom handle at a 45-degree angle in the
door track will prevent the door from being forced open.
- Lock up your home, even if you go out only for a short time.
- Your house should appear occupied at all times. Use timers to switch lights and radios on and off when you're not at home.
- Consider your landscaping in light of your home's security. Trees
located near windows or shrubbery that might shield a burglar from view
can be major flaws in your home-protection plan.
Business Security Tips
- Properly secure any door that is not used by customers at all times.
- Install adequate lighting inside and outside, especially around doors and windows and in parking areas.
- Install heavy-duty locks and other types of security hardware on all doors and windows to reduce the chance of a forcible entry.
- Mark
all equipment, including computers and cash registers, with an
identification number (tax ID or license). Keep a record of all
identification numbers off the premises with other important records.
- Make
bank deposits often and during business hours. Do not establish a
regular pattern. Take different routes at different times during the
day.
