Your holidays should be relaxing and stress-free. Along with setting your alarm system, it’s important to take additional steps to give yourself peace of mind.
Follow these steps to enjoy your time away knowing that your home will be safe and secure.

  • Ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked.
  • Let your neighbors know you'll be away and ask them to keep a watch.
  • Leave them clear instructions and a contact number in case of an emergency.
  • Don't leave house keys concealed inside or outside the house. Leave them with a trusted friend or neighbor.
  • Arrange for mail to be held or redirected by your post office.
  • Try to make your home look occupied. Don't leave the curtains closed and use automatic time switches for lights and perhaps a radio or television in a downstairs room.
  • Cancel all deliveries such as newspapers.
  • Disconnect the electrical supply on radio controlled or electronic garage doors and use manual locks instead.
  • Make a list of all the valuable items in your home and check that your home contents insurance is up-to-date.
  • Arrange for someone to cut your lawn and water your garden (or shovel snow!).
  • Put away tools and ladders that might be used to enter your home.
  • Leave valuable items such as jewelry in a house-safe or in a safety deposit box at your bank.
  • Turn down the ringing volume on your telephone
